A balloon filled with helium tied to an inflexible anchor point in the middle of a car.

When the car accelerates (forwards) the balloon moves forward relative to the bit of the car its tied to. When the car decelerates the balloon moves backwards relative to the anchor point, when the cars speed is constant the balloon effectively hovers above its anchor point.

Windows and vents closed, blowers off.

Pretty neat if you think about why it happens. It's like a candle in a jar on a turntable, the flame will lean towards the center of the turntable. Oh density you whore.

Stupid post I know but I thought it was interesting.

Now, when you say, "in the middle of the car..." do you mean inside the vehicle or outside. Seems like a dumb question but if its outside i see no possible way that it could lean into the force of the wind....

Inside the car, but I'm not sure why you would want to bolt a balloon on a stick in the middle of your car and drive around. Sure there's probably just some math equation to prove this but.... w/e

The balloon is an acceleration indicator.

We did the same thing back in the dark ages with: a glass jar with lid, string, and a cork (and water).

You attach the string to the cork and the middle of the jar lid so that it hangs down without toching the bottom. Making sure that the lid does not leak, you fill the jar up to the brim with water and the cork inside. Screw on the lid (hopefully, it won't leak) and turn the jar upside down so the cork floats toward the top but is held by the string. You can use this in a car or just walk briskly and watch the cork - it will move in the direction of the acceleration.

The cool thing is to take it on a merry-go-round and watch what it does...
